I’ve ignored my blog for a while!! not intentionally, I have just been so busy through January. So here is some of what I have done, lots of new designs and ideas on the work table with some older designs reinstated with a few little improvements. Above is a mini rainbow pony and mini molly dolly bear, below are some knitted pocket animals, I used to make these a couple of years ago and have waited for an opportunity to revise the pattern and add them to my shop.
Above is a lovely new Molly Dolly with a linen and Liberty tana lawn dress and little felt fox purse. Below are a couple of new yoyo baby dolls available here. And a lovely Molly Dolly mouse in knitted pants and vintage cotton top.
The white linen puppy and rainbow pony were just completed today and will be in my Etsy shop soon. I love adding just enough kitsch details, like flourescent bling, rainbow hair and cartoon like features to contrast nicely with the linen, hand stitching and vintage cloths. I’m also working up a lot of jewellery samples, some painted clay, some shrink plastic drawings and some leather and cloth wrist bands. The last couple of photos show me half way through sorting out my workspace, with Ikea shelves and boxes, still a lot to do but it’s looking better organised already! so I hope your new year has got off to a swinging start as well, I’ve got to get back to work now, see you soon.
At last I have finished my beautiful Queen of birds, Raphaella. I wanted her costume to be rich in detail but to have a travelling gypsy feel to it. Her muslin dress has coloured threads, vintage buttons and ribbon, flowers, pom poms and miniature vintage copper pots attached to it she also carries a basket of yarn, vintage silk shawl and bow with a tiny hand-made shrink plastic brooch. Her eyes are a beautiful pale green glass. I hand knitted her royal crown from my own pattern then decorated it with vintage buttons beads and a little bell.
Viviana is finished, she will be in my shop tomorrow. She has been a huge amount of work but I’m really pleased with how she has turned out. I’m continuing to develop this doll body shape, Viviana is basically the same as Summer but with a different head. Her body is off white linen and her limbs are wired so that she can hold her bear and bag or sit on a chair with her knees bent. Her beautiful red hair is wool and her face has been partly sculpted with stitches to form her nose and eyelids, her mouth is embroidered and she has blush on her cheeks and nose, her eyes are glass and were hand made in Wales. Her accessories include pale yellow felt bunny ear head band, fake leather tote bag, hand knitted wool neck warmer and a lovely little apricot teddy bear called Wilson. She wears a vintage cotton blouse, linen jacket with tiny shrink art brooch, Linen skirt with muslin under skirt, striped socks and fantastic fake leather red shoes, what more could a girl want?
Humpty Dumpty and Jessica Jane join Bitsy Boo in my line up of new dolls, I have a few more to complete then I’m moving on to some painting, small oils, small watercolours and some wooden egg cups for easter….then I want to make a few clay dolls!!! wow I feel tired already, so back to work.
Little Red is clothed at last, I’ve gone for raw edges and lots of coloured stitching, I wanted it to evolve as I worked, I usually find it’s best for me to work like this, the character emerges and develops whilst I work. So as I put together scraps of vintage silk and linen a costume started to appear. I like the mismatched quality of her outfit and the slightly rough-hewn feel. Her skirt is padded and made from vintage kimono silk and scraps of silk handed down to me from my mums dressmaking business. She has one hand painted button at her waist.
I am still working on her accessories, completed is her knitted red hood a felt wolf’s head! a basket and a couple of disguises that may well come in handy as I have no idea what adventures little Red has been involved in?
Who’s behind the mask? and is that little Red or the mysterious Miss Bird?
