Preparing Christmas stock, I spent this weekend painting peg dolls and working out several new designs, I am also working on some peg doll kits for customers big and small to get creative with their own ideas. I’m concentrating on smaller designs at the moment, stocking fillers and decorations for shop stock and then I will move on to the larger bespoke items in preparation for Christmas fairs. I like to have a couple of projects on the go at once that way if I am loosing inspiration or getting a little tired with something I can work in another area. This is a great way to take a break from a problem whilst still being creative and usually coming up with a solution at the same time.
So in between peg dolls I have also been working on illustrations for my Christmas cards, I will post about these separately. And whilst drawing I resolved several construction and presentation problems I was having with the peg dolls.
I have lots of ideas for new plates, this is the first batch finished and ready for my Etsy shop and paper scissors stone in Bristol. I am planning a couple of designs for weddings, births and other celebrations that can have your personal information added. These plates look really great hanging on the wall especially in a group. Mugs, tea cups and egg cups are also in the pipeline. Inspired by folk paintings and my dolls, it is interesting how working in different mediums informs your approach to each, I am always learning.
I am working on a series of small paintings in preparation for Autumn and Christmas, I hope to have these printed as greetings cards and maybe a few prints to frame. The last couple of weeks of the holidays were absolutely exhausting then getting the children settled back into school has left me feeling ragged and ever so slightly panicked about my lack of preparation for the coming season. I am trying to keep a business head and focus on what I think will be my best sellers, I have lists, charts and sketches all over the house! and to be honest there are many jobs I should be doing today but painting head toppled the business head right off my shoulders, I am justifying this as I do need new images that are specifically themed for cards and prints. I am also working on painted ceramics and planning peg dolls, christmas fairy dolls and maybe an advent calender.
I had fun creating these small works, I was drinking my morning coffee, the children were still asleep, it was the perfect moment to get some work done. I decided to paint the paper with some of my coffee, I then worked around the idea of one character, Lucy the shape changing woman, she transforms into birds, a fox and a cat-like creature. It was interesting getting to know her through a series of drawings as well as exploring techniques with fine ink pens and water colours.
So first of all I must apologise for my long absence, the summer holidays are always so busy juggling work and children. I will try to catch up with some of the new work I have done. Today I am working on some painted spoons and vintage pegs, so far I am very happy with the way they are turning out. These will be in my Etsy store very soon. I have painted and drawn a lot recently and this is informing my approach to doll making and other mediums, I have also been looking at a lot of art especially folk art ( a recent trip to the american museum was very inspiring) I was delighted when I found these beautiful old pegs, they are beautiful objects and I hope I have done them justice with my additions.
I have painted some new ceramics this week getting ready for Paper Scissors Stone, a Bristol based shop that brilliantly showcases local talent. It’s Easter holidays so I am working in the evenings, cups and saucers and large serving plates so far. I’ve had to ask the children for a ten minute break to write this post and clear my head before I take nine 12-year-old girls to a laser fusion birthday party and then back home for an overnight!! just writing about it makes me want to lie down and breath into a paper bag!!! But it is a beautiful sunny day so all is well.
